    Nope, the Sun is not solid. It is made up of a special gas called "plasma". It has no solid surface like the Earth so it has some pretty special qualities as a result. Because it's entirely made of gas, the gases near the equator spin faster than the gases near the poles. This is called "differential rotation" (as in it rotates differently) and causes the Sun's magnetic fields to get all tangled up on themselves. When that happens, it can result in solar flares.
