    hi!

It was not until the early 20th century that solar magnetic field was discovered. Using observations from the 60-foot solar tower an American solar astronomer George Hale showed that sunspots have very strong magnetic fields. He noticed that the spectral lines of the solar radiation are splitted into several components. Such splitting is known as Zeeman effect and happens in the presence of a magnetic field.
